An association for the conservation of the Barbary Macaque (Macaca sylvanus) and the integrated development of the village Setti-Fatma, in the Ourika Valley

Who are we ?

An association created during spring 2019 after many years of projects carried out with the Lycée agricole de Montmorot and many Moroccan partners.

Our actions

Since 2009, numerous studies on the Barbary Macaques have been carried out on the ecology of this population of the Upper Ourika Valley. This was followed by conservation, awareness and discovery actions with locals and tourists.

Support for ecotourism

ZAATOT support the local community of Setti-Fatma, represented by its associations and supervised by the authorities and the administration to explore with it new development paths based in particular on ecotourism.

Environmental education

ZAATOT participates in the training of Master BCCDD students from the Semlalia Faculty of Sciences in Marrakech, which is the scientific partner with the Natural History Museum, for the study of the Barbary Macaques, its conservation and its heritage enhancement.

Young ecovolunteers

An ecovolunteer stay was organized in July 2022 with about fifteen young French people and as many Moroccans between 15 and 23 years old. Their missions consisted of an inventory of the forest regeneration of protected and replanted areas and the establishment of a Nature and Mountain Center for consultation and awareness.

July 2023: Creation of Naturalist and Eco-Tourist discovery hikes in the Setti-Fatma Valley and the proximity to the Toubkal National Park
