ZAATOT, for Man and Monkey in the High-Atlas
Environmental education
Environmental education is a little-known area in Morocco, which is why ZAATOT wishes to intervene in different circles such as with one of its main partners, the Faculty of Sciences of Semlalia attached to Cadi University. Ayyad of Marrakech, but also with French and Moroccan schools, as well as in Setti-Fatma directly thanks to the Nature and Mountain Center.
Intervening through case studies that take place in the Ourika Valley shows the interest and complexity of community awareness and conservation situations. Intervening with the various formations but also with the youngest is a way for the association to draw their attention, future conservationists of the environment in Morocco and abroad, to the issue of conservation of the Barbary macaque, an endemic species. of the Maghreb, the responsibility for safeguarding of which lies primarily with Morocco.
In July 2023, ZAATOT aimed to create a Nature Club for the young people of Setti-Fatma.
Once a week, our Nature animators welcome young people to the Nature and Mountain Center to offer them awareness-raising and learning activities on the values of their Valley. Thus, Barbary Macaque recognition workshops, the flora around the waterfalls, awareness of waste management have already been carried out.
In the spring of 2022, the Setti-Fatma Nature and Mountain Center was born. This center was built during the Franco-Moroccan eco-volunteer stay and located down the waterfalls and is supported by the AESVT and the Bureau des guides de Setti-Fatma.
This center can accommodate foreign and Moroccan tourists during their visit to Setti-Fatma, children from the Nature Club, international students during discovery trips, and a starting point for our naturalist hikes.
In the Centre, it is possible to participate in awareness-raising events on the Barbary Macaque, the fauna and flora of the Ourika Valley, waste management and discovery of the various Moroccan associations acting in the Valley.
In October 2021, students of the Biodiversity, Climate Change and Sustainable Development Master's degree from the Semlalia Faculty of Sciences in Marrakech followed 1.5 days of training in Environmental Education implemented by ZAATOT accompanied by the CPIE Bresse du Jura.
The students thus trained were then immersed for 2 days in the Ourika Valley in the spring of 2022, to learn about the issues of conservation and awareness: they were able to use educational tools and think about activities to put into practice in the field.
Finally some of them, 8 in total, participated in the ecovolunteer stay carried out at the beginning of July 2022.
